Usually we like to stress the ‘information words, these are often verbs and nouns.

When there is a ‘negative ( don’t can’t etc.)in the sentence this is usually stressed.

To help you decide which words should be stressed it can be useful to take out all of the non information words and see what is left, like this.

I’m going to get a cup of tea, do you want one?

    going     get     tea,   want?

Stress in a sentence can be small or large – most sentences have more than one stress. Large stress lasts a little longer and be a bit louder.
